The antibiotic that is most often prescribed prophylactically for sickle cell anemia is penicillin, unless the child has an allergy to this medication. Through collaborative efforts with the P-SCIP pharmacy workgroup, preventive antibiotics can now be prescribed for 90 days. We have found that if families are able to receive an extended prescription, this can often improve adherence. Many pharmacies also offer delivery options for medications. When speaking with families about their antibiotic management, please consider these factors as ways to support them.
