A Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a non-invasive, painless procedure that uses ultrasound technology to visualize blood flow in the major arteries of the brain.
Children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) are at high risk for experiencing strokes. A stroke may occur if sickled cells get stuck in a blood vessel and block blood flow to the brain. According to the CDC, about 10% of children with sickle cell disease (SCD) will have a symptomatic stroke. Strokes are even more common in children with SCA. TCDs can help identify children who are at high risk for a stroke and are recommended annually for children ages 2 to 16 years with SCA.
