The antibiotic that is most often prescribed prophylactically for children with SCA is penicillin, but sometimes other antibiotics if there is an allergy. Please see the measure specifications for NDC codes. Through collaborative efforts with the P-SCIP Pharmacy Workgroup, preventive antibiotics can now be prescribed for 90 days. Members of the pharmacy workgroup have recommended that prescribers use this sig when writing for extended fills:
“Dispense entire 90-day supply"
“Chronic treatment for Sickle Cell Disease”
"Do not reconstitute at the pharmacy, please instruct the patient/caregiver on the reconstitution volume and stability so they may reconstitute at home as needed"
It is also helpful to be aware of pharmacies that offer home delivery options, as getting to the pharmacy can be a barrier for families.
